INFANT & CHILD EYE EXAMS

A lifetime of healthy vision for your child begins today

An important part of your child’s growth and development is dependent on vision. Children are often unaware of what good vision should look like and do not generally complain since they don’t know any differently. But we should. In fact, if signs and symptoms are caught early on, many eye disorders such as amblyopia, strabismus, and binocular vision dysfunction can be treated much more successfully.

It isn’t uncommon to mistakenly label a child who appears to function normal but have ongoing visual and perceptual issues. Some may even assume that their child has a learning disability or behavioural problems when in fact it is related to the child’s eyes. After all, parents are lead to believe that a “passed” vision screening conducted by their child’s pediatrician or school should mean that their child has healthy eyes while in fact many aspects of the eye and vision are not actually being tested and are often overlooked. That is why school screenings and pediatrician screenings are falling out of favour towards having your child’s vision health conducted by an eye doctor.

Here’s an incomplete list of indicators which may help screen your child for a vision related disorder:

• Frequent headaches
• Squinting / hard blinking
• Closing / rubbing of the eyes
• Unusual head posture (tilt/turn)
• Poor attention span
• Performing below their school potential
• Eye wanders in or out
• Red or watery eyes
• Unequal ‘red eye’ reflex in photographs
• White pupil
• Fine or gross motor delays
• Using a finger to maintain place while reading
• Losing place while reading
• Omitting or confusing words when reading
